FinExplorer vs Arixcel Explorer

Written by a practising financial model auditor · last updated 13 August 2026

Arixcel Explorer is a good tool with a long track record, and if you already use it you probably like it. This page is an honest comparison from the people who make the alternative — including the cases where Arixcel is still the better buy.

The short version. Both tools trace formulas inside Excel. FinExplorer costs about half as much. The bigger difference is scope: Arixcel Explorer navigates a model, but it does not audit one. If what you actually need is to find the mistakes in a model — hardcoded numbers buried inside formulas, a row where one cell breaks the pattern — that is a different job, and it is what FinAudit does.

Licensing, plainly stated

If you came here comparing licence terms rather than features, here is ours without the runaround:

What Arixcel Explorer is genuinely good at

It has been around far longer than we have, it is used inside large institutions, and that maturity shows. If you want a settled tool from an established vendor with years of deployment behind it, that is a real argument and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

It is also worth saying plainly: Arixcel does formula navigation well. We are not claiming to have invented something they got wrong. We built FinExplorer because we wanted the same category of tool at a price a single analyst could put on a personal card, and because we needed the auditing half that no navigator provides.

Where the two actually differ

1. Navigating is not the same as reviewing

A navigator answers “where does this number come from?” An auditor answers “which numbers in this model are wrong?” Those sound similar and are not. You can trace a formula perfectly and still miss that someone typed *1.08 into the middle of a revenue line eighteen months ago.

FinAudit scans the workbook and reports what it finds: constants embedded inside formulas, cells that break the pattern of the row or column they sit in, inconsistent formulas across a range that should be uniform — each ranked by how likely it is to matter. That is the part of the job that survives a manual review, and it is why the bundle exists.

2. Price, and what that price implies

US$21 a year is deliberately low. It is not a loss leader or an introductory rate; it is what we think a focused tool for one analyst should cost. The practical effect is that you can expense it without a purchase order, or simply pay for it yourself, which is how most people actually end up with software they like.

3. Your model never leaves your computer

Both add-ins read your workbook locally, inside your own copy of Excel. Nothing is uploaded, no telemetry is collected, and both work with no internet connection once your licence has been checked. If you open client models under an engagement letter, that matters more than any feature.

4. It installs without administrator rights

The installer copies two files into your own Excel startup folder. No MSI, no registry changes outside your own user, no IT ticket. In a locked-down bank or audit firm, that is often the difference between using a tool and not.

When you should stay with Arixcel

We would rather you buy the right thing than buy ours. Arixcel is the better choice if:

What we would suggest instead, in that last case: keep Arixcel and add FinAudit on its own for US$21. The auditing is the piece you do not currently have, and the two do not conflict.

Trying both

You do not have to take any of this on trust. Both vendors offer a free trial, and the honest way to choose is to run each one over a model you already know well — ideally one you have already reviewed by hand, so you can see what each tool catches and what it misses.

Our trial is a direct download: 10 days, every feature unlocked, no card and no account. There is also a three-minute recording if you would rather watch first.

Questions people ask before switching

Can I run both at once?

Yes. They are separate Excel add-ins and do not interfere with each other. Several people trial ours alongside whatever they already have, on the same workbook, precisely to compare.

What happens to my licence if I stop paying?

The ribbon buttons stop working. Your workbooks are untouched — formulas, data and any report sheets stay exactly as they are and remain fully usable in Excel without the add-in. One practical note: if you have highlights applied, use Clear highlights before the licence lapses so the original cell colours are restored.

Is this really made by one person?

Yes. Built by a practising financial model auditor, because the tools that did what was needed cost more than they should. Support is a real human replying at support@valuation.cl, usually within a business day.

Comparisons with other tools

If you are also weighing up the bigger suites: Macabacus is a much broader productivity add-in at US$200–360 a year, and Operis OAK is a dedicated model auditor at roughly US$400. Both do more than we do in their own directions. The comparison table on our home page puts all four side by side.

A note on fairness. Arixcel, Macabacus and Operis are other companies' products and trademarks, used here only to describe and compare. We have no affiliation with any of them, and nothing on this page should be read as their endorsement. Prices were checked on the date at the top of this page and can change; if you find something here that is out of date or wrong, email support@valuation.cl and we will correct it.
